A Favourite Aunt

Created by Stephen 5 years ago

Auntie Gwen was a special Aunt to me. For as long as I can remember whenever she visited or we visited or phoned her it was not long before there was uproarious laughter. Funny things just seemed to happen when Auntie Gwen was around. Perhaps it was just that she could see the funny side of just about everything and she had a way of turning the mundane and dreary in to funny observations and stories. Auntie Gwen was also took a keen interest in her extended family of nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces. In my case she knew that I was interested in old coins from an early age and she looked out for unusual coins from the London Transport leather satchel she used as a ticket collector on the 159 bus for many years. I remember her excitement the evening she came to our house with a very old sixpence that was tendered for a fare I think in 1965. It bore the head of George 111 and was dated 1818. She gave me that coin. It started a lifetime passion for me collecting coins. She continued to look out for coins for me and when she visited Australia in 2012 she came with a bag of old coins she thought I would like. I will miss her dearly for her affection, consideration and her wonderful ability to see the absurdity of life. Stephen, Vicki and family
