Memories of Gwen

Created by Margaret 5 years ago
Gwen was my first correspondant in the family- she wrote to me when I was a young girl and we exchanged letters for some years before our first meeting when I was 11 and we came to England for a visit. She always remembered birthdays and Christmas, sending us cards and gifts. She actually remembered birthdays more accurately than some of the birthday people themselves- I remember one of our adult children saying to me "I think Auntie Gwen is a bit confused, she wished me a happy 24th birthday." To which I replied, "It's not Aunty Gwen who is confused, you ARE 24!"She was always known for her eccentricity, I remember what a comfort to her it was that Uncle Tom's funeral had caused a large traffic jam! She thought that would have pleased him! (And it would). We enjoyed their hospitality when we visited England and Gwen was happy to show us around, hopping on and off the correct buses with practised ease. On her last visit to Australia we enjoyed a boat trip together after lunch and it was good to see both her and Frank negotiating the embarking and disembarking so well. I am sorry that we didn't have the chance to say goodbye but I know this is the way Gwen would have wanted to go, in her sleep while still living independently. Vale Auntie Gwen
